American Literature 1400-1865

Catalog description

Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL C1000 or ENGL C1000H. The concentration of this course is on the voices and perspectives of Native peoples, European explorers, and Americans, from 1400-1865. Students are introduced to some of the historical, cultural, religious, and social issues which helped shape the ideas of the times, including the ideas of the early Spanish and British settlers and the Enlightenment Rationalists and Empiricists of the 18th Century. Students also critically explore literary and cultural movements of the 19th Century, such as Romanticism, Symbolism, and Transcendentalism. This survey is characterized by critical thinking, close textual reading, and analytical writing. (C-ID: ENGL 130) (UC, CSU, AVC)
