EMS Operations and Special Populations

Catalog description

Limitations on Enrollment: Formal admission to the Paramedic Certificate Program; annual physical exam and TB clearance; current immunizations; personal liability insurance; background clearance; drug screening; and current AHA Healthcare Provider BLS certification. Prerequisites: EMT 121, EMT 122, EMT 123, EMT 125. This course prepares paramedic students to manage the medical and psychosocial needs of patients from special populations, including older adults, patients with physical or cognitive disabilities, victims of abuse or neglect, individuals affected by poverty or homelessness, and those receiving home or hospice care. Students also gain foundational knowledge in EMS operations, including crime scene awareness, hazardous materials, ambulance safety, mass casualty incidents (MCIs), incident command, and disaster preparedness. Emphasis is placed on safety, communication, compassion, and adherence to EMS operational standards and protocols. (CSU, AVC)
