EMT 101
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Antelope Valley College · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Limitations on Enrollment: Students may be required to complete a specific medical exam, including TB testing and required immunizations, and pass a criminal background check as outlined by the course instructor. Students must meet the physical demands of working in an emergency environment, which includes the ability to lift, squat, bend, climb stairs, and meet standards for hearing, eyesight, and speech. Enrollment is contingent on class availability with a maximum of 20 students per lab section, maintaining a 10:1 student-to-instructor ratio for hands-on skill training. This course is approved by the Los Angeles County EMS Agency. Advisory: EMT 900 and BIOL 100. Uniform Requirement: For the purposes of professionalism, safety, and identifiability, students are required to wear a designated uniform during lectures, lab sessions, and internships. The uniform consists of the following approved items: • AVC EMT White Polo Shirt • AVC EMT Navy Blue T-shirt • AVC EMT 1/4 Zip Sweatshirt (Optional) • AVC EMT Hat (Optional) • Black Belt • Navy Blue Work Pants • Black Work Boots • AVC EMT ID Badge • Watch with a Second Hand The AVC EMT uniform articles (polo shirt, t-shirt, sweatshirt, and hat) must be ordered through the approved vendor of the EMT course. Other uniform components, such as the belt, pants, boots, and watch, may be purchased at the discretion of the student, provided they meet the standards discussed during the first class session. The approximate total cost of the required uniform items is $150. Proper adherence to the uniform policy is mandatory, and failure to comply may result in restrictions on participation in lab or field activities. This course covers the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), focusing on emergency medical services procedures and patient care techniques. Upon successful completion, students receive a certificate of completion from Antelope Valley College. Students are then eligible to sit for the National Registry EMT certification exam, which is required for professional certification. Students must hold or obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers before the first class session, and detailed requirements will be provided during the initial meeting.
