AUGMENTATIVE AND ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION

Catalog description
This course is designed so that participants can learn the alternatives offered by assistive technology and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in developing communication skills in populations with severe communication disorders. Symbol systems and vocabulary selection strategies are described. The Augmentative Alternative Communicat ion Predictive Assessment Model is discussed and analyzed. Motor access and visual consideration strategies are studied. Use of AAC with individuals evidencing specific disabilities such as apraxia of speech, autism, multiple sclerosis and physical disabil ities are demonstrated. Funding and legal issues in augmentative and alternative communication are discussed.
