ENGINEERING MATERIALS
Ana G. Mendez University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Three credit-hours. Three hours of lectures per week. Governing principles of material properties and behavior. Atomic structures and bonding; crystalline structures, defects and dislocations. Mechanical Properties. Diffusion processes. Phase transformations and diagrams. Polymers, ceramics, and composites. There will be emphasis in the use of critical thinking when establ ishing what materials are required for certain applications. Quantitative reasoning will be used to establish the range and estimation of certain material properties and states of atomic diffusion. Scientific reasoning is necessary to establish the connection between processes that are used to change the structure of the materials which in turn change their properties and the performance of such materials.
