Catalog description
The General Biochemistry course studies the basic concepts of thermodynamics and its applications in biochemistry. The structure and function of biomolecules such as: amino acids, proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids are systematically discussed. The characterization, physical properties, and methods to isolate biomolecules. Enzyme cofactors, the structure, function, kinetics, and regulation of enzymes and enzymatic reactions. The study of the different metabolic pathways for the degradation and biosynthesis of the main classes of biological molecules. The bioenergetic aspects of metabolism are discussed in the context of catabolis m and anabolism. In the laboratory, technological competence is observed in the use of the basic techniques currently used in biochemical laboratories with separation techniques, chromatography, purification, enzyme kinetics, electrophoresis, recombinant DNA, DNA polymerase chain reaction and quantification of biomolecules such as: proteins and nucleic acid fragments and safety in the laboratory skill. The student will be trained in the correct use of safety rules in the laboratory, the different equipment and glassware. The course consists of 45 hours of lectures and 45 hours of laboratory.
