CHEM 225
FUNDAMENTALS OF ORGANIC AND BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY
Ana G. Mendez University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The course includes the principles of Organic and Biological Chemistry towards students of professions related to health. Includes topics on the structure and reactions of saturated organic chemical compounds: alkanes, cycloalkanes, and haloalkanes. Structure and reactions of unsaturated compounds: alkenes, and alkynes. The concept of structural isomers and bonds is discussed. Structure and reactions of aromatic compounds and compounds containing oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids, amines and amides, sulfides and thiols. Structure and function of biomolecules: amino acids, proteins, enzymes, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids. Introduction to metabolic processes and energy production . In the laboratory, the student is provided with a complement for the general panoramic view of the basic concepts of organic molecules at the structural level, and the general chemical and physical properties of organic molecules are observed and compared with the properties of inorganic compounds. The chemical and physical properties of organic molecules of different functional groups are discussed at the experimental level. The concept of chemical synthesis the preparation of the commonly used pain reliever, acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and the preparation of soap. The course consists of 45 hours of lectures and 45 hours of laboratory.
