Catalog description

This is an introductory microbiology course for undergraduate students in the area of veterinary and health sciences. The course provides the student with the fundamental concepts of microbiology to develop skills and competencies necessary for their effective and safe performance in the clinical-hospital setting. The students will be able to explore topics related to morphology, physiology, biochemistry, metabolism and genetics of microorganisms. Also, the student will have the opportunity to visit the rep resentative members of microorganisms such as: bacteria, algae, protozoa and viruses, including the functions of various microorganisms in health, diseases and modes of transmission. In addition, topics on microbial control, microbe -host interactions, epid emiology, emerging diseases, some basic concepts about immunology and some microbiological applications are included. The laboratory component provides the student with practical skills related to aseptic technique, disinfection, isolation and cultivation of microorganisms, microbial control, microscopy techniques and stains, among other applications related to human and veterinary health. The course consists of 45 hours of lectures and 45 hours of laboratory.
