Community, Sustainability, and Service (3) This course introduces students to the general fields of environmental sustainability, critical development studies, agrarian studies, urban studies, and food and water justice movements, drawing on the expertise of local community partners, and using the methodological lenses of community-based service learning. Students learn how to connect global and international problems to the ongoing work of local organizations in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, and have opportunities to serve and learn alongside these established community partners. The course draws on scholarship from the fields of history, political ecology, agrarian studies, anthropology, bioethics, environmental justice, geography, and urban planning and design. Finally, the class weaves academic work with service-learning opportunities, excursions to visit community partners in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, and a hands-on introduction to community-based research methodology. Grading: A-F only.
