Introduction to Ethical Perspectives in International Studies (3) Ideas about morality, responsibility, and justice are important in the field of international studies. Rather than begin with the question of whether ethics matter in world politics, this course begins with the premise that propriety is identifiable and inherent in all action. To unpack this premise, the course explores different ethical frameworks (virtue ethics, deontological ethics, consequentialism, and pragmatism) and applies them to international cases, concepts, and configurations. Cases may include nuclear weapons use, humanitarian intervention, and state creation; concepts may include international law, war, and peace; and configurations may include empire, hegemony, and global society.
