Trans Africa: LGBTIAQ+/Beyond
American University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Trans Africa: LGBTIAQ+ and Beyond (3) This course introduces students to theories of queerness in scholarship by Africans. Focusing on the gendered and sexual identities depicted in African literature, film, photography and political discourse, the course shows that conversation on sexual minorities is as much about the lives of sexual minorities as it is a referendum on African democracies, politics, and social practices impacting these minorities. Students read, discuss, analyze, and write critically about creative and contested responses to these developments in selected African countries. AU Core Habits of Mind: Cultural Inquiry. Grading: A-F only. AU Abroad: Kenya: Nairobi.
