Catalog description

History of Rock Music (3) This course presents the complex and turbulent history of rock music through an exploration of culture via sound. From spirituals and worksongs, the gritty saxophones of the 1950s to the Roland TR-808 of the early 1980s, students listen as the sounds and the spaces embodied in rock converge in the genre-bending sample-heavy mashups bringing it all together today. This chronological survey is filtered through the perspectives of the artists, journalists, and scholars whose cultural explorations and interrogations fed the United States-born music and then turned it into a world-wide phenomenon. AU Core Habits of Mind: Cultural Inquiry. Usually Offered: fall.
