Hidden Figures and Algorithmic Cultures (3) This course explores how algorithms have shaped cultural forms of narration and representation and how artistic and literary forms intersect with methods of quantitative reasoning. Students examine the rise of algorithmic culture by tracking how quantitative methods increasingly influence daily life, especially through discourses of big data, machine learning, and data visualization. In addition, students engage in creative and artistic responses to algorithmic technologies (including literature, music, visual art, film, and games) in order to ask how quantitative methods might be deployed differently to interrogate concepts of objectivity, identity, and power. AU Core Integrative Requirement: Quantitative Literacy II. Usually Offered: fall and spring. Grading: A-F only. Prerequisite: completion of Quantitative Literacy I requirement. Note: Prior experience with data analysis or coding not required.
