This practicum is structured as an experiential learning opportunity where students are responsible, under the guidance of the faculty, to provide strategic advice to the United Nations Committee against Torture, through its chairperson and country rapporteurs, on whether countries are in compliance with the extensive obligations laid down in the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. The practicum is purpose-oriented, providing students with some fundamental background literature while the students themselves discover additional materials through their own research, drafting, presentations, and interactions with other participants and with the Committee against Torture. The practicum includes a week-long experience at the Committee's session in Geneva, Switzerland. A simulation of a Committee proceeding beforehand further prepares the students to effectively advise the Committee, the supervisory body of the Convention.
