American University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course offers an introduction to consumer law, focusing on both policy goals and practical challenges. The course will explore U.S. consumer protection laws and institutions, and make international comparisons for a broader perspective. It will focus on the intersection of consumer protection with other areas of law, such as privacy, competition, financial regulation, environmental regulation, and trade. Among the subjects we will cover are the regulation of advertising, deception, disclosures, unfair commercial practices, and the resolution of consumer contract disputes. It will also explore the many emerging challenges of digital markets; these include the role of influencers, platforms, cross-border transactions, and the use of artificial intelligence and personal data in consumer transactions.
