Gangs and Gang Violence (3) This course covers issues dealing directly with gang theory, including understanding modern street gangs, their origins, and their socioeconomic impact on urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods, athletics, and music. The course examines gang practices (recruitment, beat-ins, punishment); communications (graffiti, hand signs, codes); lifestyle (clothing); and structure, as well as the nature of gangs in the United States. The course offers a look at gangs in the military as well as in the workplace. Attention is given to the different types of gangs that exist (street, prison, outlaw motorcycle). Suppression, intervention, and prevention methods of addressing the gang issue are also discussed.
