Global Health Perspectives (3) This course uses a social justice lens to explore a range of the most fundamental health concerns experienced by people and populations around the globe, with a focus on the developing world. It examines the underlying causes for these health concerns, unpacking drivers of health inequities, many of which are rooted in and exacerbated by poverty and structural oppression. The course explores issues such as HIV/AIDS, maternal health, hunger, malaria, and COVID-19, to understand how and why unequal access to information and care fuel disparities in health outcomes. Students take a critical look at the roles, responsibilities, motivations, and impact of a range of actors and institutions in the global health response, and compare various approaches and service delivery models used to address global health concerns. With people and human rights at the center of the exploration, and with courage, compassion, cultural humility, and bold vision, the course also begins a reimagining of the future of global health. Prerequisite: junior standing.
