Developing Knowledge Review
American University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Developing the Knowledge Review (3) This course supports scholar-practitioners with a preidentified problem of practice topic in developing the knowledge review section of their Dissertation of Practice. Entering with a topic and initial assessment of context and importance, students research their problem of practice, reading, analyzing, and synthesizing sources of knowledge, organizing knowledge into themes, and developing claims about the knowledge reviewed. The course supports students in refining their problem of practice and searching for extant knowledge around the identified problem, then analyzing and writing about that knowledge. Students learn how to do scholarly research, with the expectation that the tools and methods learned are utilized independently, resulting in a draft of the knowledge review by the end of the course.
