American University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The History of Media: Examining Eras and Societal Impact (3) From books to newspapers to movies to television and social media, media is everywhere, and it powerfully shapes how we see ourselves and the world. This course explores the social and historical evolution of U.S. media systems across four different historical eras. Beginning with books, newspapers, film, radio, and television and continuing to video games, podcasts, social media, and the internet, this course examines their cultural, political, and economic impacts, including advertising, public relations, and media consolidation. Through critical readings, media analysis, discussion, and historical case studies, students evaluate how mass media both reflects and shapes identity, power, democracy, and everyday life. AU Core Habits of Mind: Socio-Historical Inquiry. Usually Offered: fall and spring. Note: No prior coursework in media history required.
