Catalog description

Artists, Audiences, and Afterlives FA1 (3) Drawing in part on museum collections in the DC area, this course explores how visual images and works of architecture constructed, claimed, and sometimes contested social values. Case studies, taken from across the geohistorical spectrum, explore politics, religion, race, gender, and sexuality to understand the differing perspectives of artists, their original audiences, and the afterlives of these objects in cultural memory and contemporary society. By investigating both familiar and unfamiliar works of art, students gain an appreciation for how their vibrant strategies of visual communication compel us even today. AU Core Habits of Mind: Creative-Aesthetic Inquiry. Usually Offered: fall and spring.
