Introduction to Social Work

This course introduces students to the profession of social work, its historical roots, core values, ethics and diverse fields of practice. Emphasis is placed on the generalist intervention model, professional roles and the impact of systemic oppression and privilege. Students explore how social workers promote social, economic and environmental justice across micro, mezzo and macro systems. The course also fosters self-awareness and professional development through critical reflection, case studies and discussions on ethical practice, diversity and advocacy. Designed as a foundational course, SOW 101 prepares students for continued study in the field of social work and related helping professions. CSWE Required Competencies This course is designed in accordance with the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS). As an introductory course in the social work curriculum, SOW 101 addresses the foundational competencies required for accredited social work programs.
