Instructional Methods for Mild to Moderate Support Needs

This course is focused on designing and enacting instructional plans for students with mild/moderate support needs. Education specialist residents will complete a culminating assignment of a lesson and unit plan that integrates the learning strengths and needs, IEP goals, and required accommodations and modifications for their students in their clinical placement. Residents are provided with access to strategies from UDL and adapting and differentiating curriculum is modeled by course instructors. An overview of assistive technology (AT) is covered, in addition to an assistive technology assignment in which residents must integrate AT into a student’s lesson and reflect on the effectiveness of the tool on student learning. The SPED 203 culminating project, The UDL Lesson Plan & Reflection, allows residents to receive targeted feedback from the course instructors. Education specialist residents apply these skills as they pertain to their specific area of specialization and credential authorizations across age and grade levels. Education Specialists will also develop their pedagogical understanding and instructional practices in teaching mathematics to students with mild/moderate disabilities. The course will culminate in either a UDL Lesson Plan or a mini-lesson, depending on the resident’s future placement. In both lessons, assistive technology will be a required component of the lesson.
