Secondary Social Science Methods III

Catalog description

This is the third course in a multi-course series for Single Subject History credential candidates to develop professional, reflective practices and abilities for teaching in single subject classrooms in secondary schools. The theme of this course is “culturally responsive teaching in the history/ social science classroom” and it is meant to be a way of enacting Barbara J Love’s framework for Liberatory Consciousness and operationalizing CRT in the HSS setting. Residents will start by building awareness for the current state of HSS curricula and how their students experience it, analyze why it is happening and what needs to be done, take action by creating a culturally responsive unit plan and enacting various HSS teaching strategies, and consider how to hold themselves and others accountable to this work moving forward. Residents’ learning in this course will be derived not only from relevant theory and research based practices, but also from their work in building their own culturally responsive unit plans. Whereas the 271 course was mostly focused on plug and play techniques and lesson strategies for the HSS classroom, the 272 course will include some specific lesson-level teaching strategies but ultimately be more focused on the course design/unit level and the residents’ identity as an HSS teacher. During the course, there will also be opportunities for residents to get support on their EdTPA.
