Secondary Social Science Methods II

Catalog description

This is the second course in a multi-course series for Single Subject Social Science credential candidates to develop professional, reflective practices and abilities for teaching in single subject classrooms, especially in secondary schools. The theme of this course is the power of asking questions in the HSS classroom. Building on our summer work where we developed complex answers to three 3 relatively simple questions (What are you going to teach? How are you going to teach it? And, why are you going to teach it?), this fall we will ask: What questions should we ask?, How should we ask them?, and, Why should we ask questions in the HSS classroom? Residents will learn and practice how to ask meaningful, provocative, and intentional questions of their students at the lesson and unit planning level, and they will learn how to assess students’ responses to the questions they ask. In the process, they will think about how to best support deep social science learning for all, and especially for multilingual and neurodiverse learners. Residents’ learning will be derived not only from relevant theory and research based inquiry and discussion practices, but also from their own reflective practices on their identity as a history/social science teacher and from knowledge of their students.
