Catalog description

This course is the third of a three-part English Language Arts teaching methods series. ED 262 will introduce residents to curriculum design in ELA as well as specific instructional methods for textual discussion, analysis, and composition in ELA. The course will introduce residents to principles of backward curriculum design in ELA. Residents will brainstorm essential questions to guide curricular units, select and map texts onto these units, and design ELA performance assessments. Residents will learn how to scope and sequence a year-long literacy plan that apprentices students into standards-aligned reading and writing skills in a variety of genres (e.g. literature, drama, argumentative writing). They will plan and self-assess a unit of study in ELA. Residents will also plan and enact two lessons that are designed to assess their ability to teach specific ELA teaching methods. In the prior methods course (ED 261), residents planned and enacted lessons that assessed their ability to plan and lead a text-based discussion and to apprentice students into metalinguistic awareness as they read and write. In this course, residents will practice designing lessons that examine texts from a critical perspective (e.g. Who is represented in this text? Which voices are excluded?) and that harness digital technology to promote social awareness and change.
