Catalog description

is designed to empower residents with the theories, principles, knowledge, and pedagogical approaches necessary to support a diverse range of students in learning science in elementary and middle school classrooms. Residents engage in learning experiences that model instructional practices appropriate for elementary and middle school science classrooms, also known as symmetry in teacher learning. This pedagogical approach provides residents with the opportunity to experience science learning as “students” in hopes of providing them with a vision of how three-dimensional teaching is operationalized in the science classroom. Additionally, the course explores the role science education plays as a vehicle for equity and justice. Residents will transfer and apply these modeled approaches, along with current learning theories of science education, to plan, enact, and assess science teaching and learning. Residents in the course will engage with content through core frameworks of Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching, Universal Design for Learning, and Whole Child Education.
