Literacy Methods for Multiple Subject & SPED Residents

is designed to empower teachers with the theory, principles, knowledge, and skills to effectively teach reading and language arts. Through the lens of California’s Literacy Teaching Performance Expectations, and with an emphasis on the five foundations of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension), residents will learn to assess, plan, and enact effective literacy instruction in their classrooms. Residents will practice and apply research-based instructional practices for teaching foundational literacy skills, meaning making and comprehension, and effective expression (speaking and writing) and integrating language and literacy instruction. ED 231A (Fall Semester) will focus on how to teach foundational skills: print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition, and oral reading fluency. Residents will apply their learning through case studies on each foundational skill and a summative foundational skills lesson cycle in their placement. ED 231B (Spring Semester) will focus on how to teach reading comprehension, vocabulary, and effective expression and how to use screening, diagnostic assessments, and intervention to support students within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports. In both ED 231A and B, residents will learn how to use and analyze different literacy assessments to monitor students’ literacy development and inform instructional decision-making for students with diverse language, literacy, and learning profiles.
