Foundations of Literacy & Social Science Integration

is the first of a two-part course series designed to empower multiple subject and education specialist residents with the theory, principles, knowledge, and skills to effectively facilitate literacy development learning for a diverse range of students. Residents will explore foundational theories and frameworks for language and literacy instruction, including state-adopted standards and frameworks, and learn how to use developmentally appropriate diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to plan literacy instruction. Finally, residents will consider all of the above through the lens of effective History/Social Science instruction and explore practices for integrating Language Arts and History/Social Sciences to support students’ content learning and language and literacy development. Residents in the course will engage with content through core frameworks of Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching, Universal Design for Learning, and Whole Child Education.
