Catalog description

Acting as a bridge between the educational theories (behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism) and the parenthetical skills developed in Fieldwork 1-3, weekly resident seminars will engage residents in a wide range of learning activities. Reading and discussing articles pertaining to current educational trends and policies at the local and national level, conducting case study analysis of key problems of practice, collaboratively problem-solving around critical incidents from the classroom, and learning, developing, and practicing a sequence of high-leverage classroom techniques, are common components to the seminar. Resident seminars are situated in the larger work of their partner schools, and as such will have an emphasis on instructional effectiveness as described in their partner’s rubrics (i.e. Aspire Student Learning Framework, KIPP Teaching Excellence Rubric, and TNTP Core). Alder-wide themes and goals including equity and Alder’s Core Values are also emphasized. The goals for the Resident Seminar are situated in a framework of California’s Teaching Performance Expectations and Alder Graduate School of Education’s Program Learning and Student Learning Outcomes.
