Moral Psychology

Catalog description

When do we compromise our individual wellbeing for the greater good? How is the mind of a psychopath similar and distinct from our own? Is it acceptable to sacrifice one person for the good of many? How does morality vary across cultures? These are but a few of the questions we will explore in Moral Psychology. Integrating research from social psychology, behavioral economics, philosophy, and cognitive neuroscience, this course examines the mental processes that give rise to - and the social influences that shape - moral judgment and behavior. Topics include altruism, violence, fairness/cheating, the role of emotions (e.g., empathy, guilt, gratitude) in decision-making, and moral foundations theory. T PSY 316 is the Honors College version of A PSY 316; only one version may be taken for credit. Prerequisite(s): A PSY 101 and A PSY 270. May not be offered 2023-2024.
