(= R POS 225) Inequality in New York City

Catalog description

New York City is defined by extreme inequality, especially along lines of class, race, ethnicity, and gender. This course will examine the key drivers of these inequalities with special attention to the rise economic inequality, gentrification, policing, and mass incarceration. We will see how and why the New York City has become such an unequal place and consider how progressives have challenged inequality through movements such as Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter. Students will learn about the public policies that have promoted inequality and efforts to ameliorate inequality through examples including universal pre-K, housing policy, and resistance to Amazon.
