Clinical Practice: Maternal & Newborn Care

Catalog description

This clinical rotation focuses on the scientific knowledge for nursing practice and innovation in neonatal, perinatal, pregnancy, fertility, and reproductive/sexual health care across all genders as the basis for clinical judgment, critical thinking, and application of the nursing process with patients, families, communities, and populations. Students will apply knowledge on sexual and reproductive health promotion, disease prevention, and acute regenerative/restorative birthing support in the ante, intra, and postpartum care period for childbearing families. The student’s role in common chronic disease management that directly impact the sexual, reproductive, and neonatal health in the childbearing family will be integrated. Nursing care in circumstances of family violence, forensics/sexual assault, gender affirming care, nonviable pregnancy, spontaneous and elective abortion, stillbirth, and infertility will be explored within ethical and legal frameworks. Prerequisite(s): H NSG 102, 212, 230, 240, 245, and 248 with a B or better and H NSG 211, A CHM 115, A PSY 101 and E PSY 224 with a C or better to register for H NSG 345. Corequisite(s): H NSG 340. Restricted to students in Nursing B.S. AM program.
