Med-Surg Nursing: Acute Care Essentials

Catalog description

This clinical rotation focuses on the scientific knowledge for nursing practice and innovation in mental health and psychiatric care as the basis for clinical judgment, critical thinking, and application of the nursing process with patients, families, communities, and populations. Students will apply knowledge on psychiatric/mental health chronic disease management and acute regenerative/restorative care for a diversity of those with common mental illness, psychiatric disorders, and traumatic stress responses. The student's role in psychosocial crisis and disaster response, population mental health wellness, and preventative mental health care will be explored. Within the ethical and legal frameworks, discussion will focus on the incorporation of elements that enhance the welfare of healthcare providers and the engagement of nurses in dealing with mental health concerns in hospice and palliative care environments. Prerequisite(s): H NSG 102 and H NSG 212 with a B or better and H NSG 211, A PSY 101 and E PSY 224 with a C or better to register for H NSG 245. Corequisite(s): H NSG 240. Restricted to students in Nursing B.S. AM program.
