The Indigenous Present and Future

Catalog description

This course provides a brief overview of Indigenous history in the 20th and 21st centuries, with a focus on current events of the last few years. Together we will explore questions like: How have Indigenous activists protected their nations' sovereignty? How have Indigenous activists pushed for and won some of the major policy changes in the United States in the recent past, and how might things change in the near future? This course will examine how Indigenous activists have pressed for change since 1923, examine some of the major recent victories of Indigenous activism, and explore the historical roots of current calls for change. A HIS 300 The History of American Indians and the United States or A HIS 100 American Political and Social History I are suggested but not required prerequisites.
