Memory and The American Civil War

Catalog description

The United States has experienced periods of severe division in its history, but only one era was so dominated by discord that the nation erupted into civil war. The years leading up to that bloody conflict, the war years of 1861-1865, and the twelve years of reconstruction that followed are the chronological framework for this course. How Americans have remembered those years, how that remembrance has shifted over time, and how that remembrance has affected racial, social, economic, and political factors ever since, are the focus. Only one of T HIS 208 and A HIS 308 may be taken for credit. Open to Honors College students only.
