This course is your gateway to the captivating world of interactive computer games, with a multi-faceted approach that merges both technical and creative aspects. It places a strong emphasis on comprehending the essence of games, the societal dimensions tied to gaming, the complete game development process, rapid prototyping, rigorous playtesting, creative problem-solving within constraints, and effective, constructive critique. In the technical component of the course, students will harness a diverse set of development tools and techniques in collaboration with a modern game engine. Together, they will embark on the design and development of numerous game prototypes, culminating in the implementation of a digital game. This is an inclusive and approachable course where students will explore how video games, and games in a broader context, shape experiences and convey ideas. They will have the opportunity to create original games, engage in thoughtful game analysis, and explore related topics such as the history, technology, narrative, and ethics of games. Importantly, no prior programming experience is required, making this course accessible to a wide range of students with varying interests and backgrounds.
