Civil Liberties in Context: Emergency Management and Homeland Security

Catalog description

In this course, students will examine the tensions between civil liberties and government responses to emergency management and homeland security. Students will draw from contemporary and historical case studies and a range of legal materials to develop their own analytical and normative views about the appropriate balance between civil liberties and security. Students will be asked to evaluate how the law governing relevant topics has changed and whether it has changed in desirable ways. Students will also be asked to determine what relevant information not yet possessed to answer these questions. Prerequisite(s): junior or senior standing.
