Catalog description

This course describes the structures, mechanisms and chemistry principles that underlie biological activities in diverse processes. Students will gain an advanced understanding of what makes living systems work at the molecular level. A comprehensive survey and discussion of biological molecules, especially nucleic acids, protein interactions with various molecules, covalent protein modifications, cellular organization, cells and synapses will be presented. We will also discuss virus, viral infection and immune system response as well as cell death. These phenomena will be further discussed in the context of human diseases, such as neurological diseases, cancer and viral illnesses and disorders in the immune system. Special techniques used for studying proteins, especially membrane proteins, will be discussed. Prerequisite(s): A grade of C or better in A CHM 220, 221, 442 and 443.
