Catalog description
Cells are the building blocks of life. This class focuses on understanding the molecular basis for how cells function, primarily eukaryotic cells. Topics include basic genetic mechanisms and protein synthesis; cell nucleus and control of gene expression; plasma membrane structure, cytoskeleton and extracellular matrix, intracellular compartments, protein sorting, exocytosis and endocytosis; cell signaling; cell replication; and cell communication. The course also discusses how cells can be studied in the laboratory. Specific types of cells, such as stem cells and cancer cells, will also be investigated. This course is part of the core requirements for the Biology/BS program as well as a suggested prerequisite for many medical, dental, and physician assistant programs. It is also very helpful for veterinary programs and allied health programs. This course may not be taken for credit by students who have already completed A BIO 217. Prerequisite(s): A BIO 130 or 121 and A BIO 131 or 120, with a grade of C- or better in A BIO 121 or A BIO 131.
