Introductory Genetics

Catalog description

Explores the biological nature of genetic material and its structure, organization, replication, expression, and regulation from the classical Mendelian Laws of inheritance to molecular genetics. Topics may include DNA structure and replication, Mendelian genetics and pedigrees, population and evolutionary genetics, eukaryotic and prokaryotic genetics, gene organization, the genetic code, mechanisms of gene expression and regulation, transcription and translation, mutations and DNA repair, and applications of genetic technology. This course is part of the core requirements for the Biology/BA, Biology/BS, and BCAMB/BS programs, and is often a suggested prerequisite for many medical, dental, physician assistant, and veterinary programs. Three class periods and one discussion section. Prerequisite(s): A BIO 130 or 121 and A BIO 131 or 120, with a grade of C- or better in A BIO 121 or A BIO 131. Students must complete A BIO 212Y with a C or better to register for A BIO 365.
