Art and Theatre 1600-1700

This course focuses upon the close relationship between art and theater in seventeenth-century Europe. We examine the ways in which painters, sculptors and architects employed strategies of performance to stage dramatic visual spectacles, as well as the pictorial qualities of theatrical performance itself. Taking into consideration the international art of the European courts; Catholic cultures in France and Spain; portraiture, still life and narrative painting, we study the diverse theatrical qualities of works by such artists as Bernini, Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, Velasquez, van Dyck, Luisa Roldán, and the team of artists who created the palace complex of Versailles. Prerequisite(s): one 100 or 200 level Art History course; or junior or senior standing.
