University of Akron · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Prerequisites: EDCI 240 and EDCI 241 . Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Writing Instruction is a comprehensive exploration of the developmental and instructional implications related to fluent reading, vocabulary acquisition, comprehension and writing instruction. Along with these core aspects of reading, major skill domains that contribute to the development of written expression are explored. This course provides preservice teacher candidates with a solid foundation for effective, explicit, systematic literacy instruction in the key areas of reading and writing. Preparation of teacher candidates is necessary to support literacy learning in English language arts and content disciplines. Focus is placed on reading, writing, speaking, and listening, all interrelated skills developed and used in learning discipline-specific curriculum, including adaptations for diverse learners from different linguistic, cultural, and academic backgrounds. The course will emphasize how to support students before, during and after reading using evidence-based teaching strategies. Opportunities to develop expertise to support students in constructing meaning from both expository and literary texts across the various subject areas including the role of academic language in learning will be presented. Writing instruction in ELA as well as in the content areas will also be incorporated. Finally, the course will examine how to align Ohio’s English Language Arts Learning Standards with lessons focusing on vocabulary, comprehension, and writing instruction. Twenty-four (24) hours of clinical field experience is required. (Formerly 5500:286)
