Catalog description

Prerequisite: EDCI 240 . This course is the second in a sequence of four literacy classes. The course is designed to teach fundamental principles and concepts of the structure of language, with a focus on the sound-symbol correspondences (phonics and spelling) of language to the reading process. Candidates will learn about the scientific and evidence-based foundations of word analysis in reading and writing, the cognitive processes involved, and how to support literacy development from birth through middle school and beyond. This course is designed to teach the concepts of language structure with a heavy emphasis on phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, word identification and spelling.
