Catalog description

This course prepares graduate students to understand and address chemical dependency through evidence-based counseling approaches. Students will explore the neurobiological and psychological foundations of addiction, examine theoretical frameworks and treatment models, and develop skills in differential assessment to recognize how substance use disorders may mimic or co-occur with other medical and psychological conditions. The course emphasizes culturally responsive practices that acknowledge how diverse factors—including age, gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and lifestyle—shape addiction experiences and inform equitable treatment strategies.
