Creative Writing: Multigenre

CW--Multigenre -- Chronicles of Joy. Since humans first carved words into clay tablets 5,000 years ago, they documented more than war casualties and business receipts. They recorded moments of love and happiness. In four units, we will look at what writers have chosen to notice and to preserve in words: (I) Interior happiness: how what we notice shapes our lives; (II) Relational joy: how our lives are enriched by others, even pets. (III) Generational joy: what we have inherited from grandparents, forebears, culture; (IV) Collective Joy: Solidarity under adversity, resistance, meaning. We will read and write poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, from the anonymous Mesopotamians to the journalists documenting acts of resistance against ICE. This multi-genre course includes the study of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Through the reading of published work, workshops, and weekly writing assignments, students practice and develop their writing in all three genres, learning terminology and the fundamental aspects of each genre.
